Where It Starts

I have a thousand ideas and they almost always begin with magazines that I've collected over the years – old ones, new ones and forgotten ones. I pull one off the shelf and start turning the pages, looking for photographs, colors, words and fragments that catch my attention.

 

Cutting the Story

I cut the pages apart and rearrange them until familiar images become something entirely new. From there, I add paint, pencil, collage, splatters and layers. Without a fixed plan, I let each piece tell me what it needs.

 

The Process

I leave rough edges, dripped paint and traces of earlier decisions. I want the history of the piece to remain visible because every layer holds part of the story.

 

Telling Her-Story

Many of the magazine images and advertisements I use were originally created to tell women who they should be. By taking them apart and rebuilding them, I get to question those messages, challenge them and create something new.

Whether I'm creating a large painting or a piece small enough to hold in your hand, every work begins with curiosity and is built one layer at a time.
